How can I avoid Galactose?
Milk-derived products with remaining (not digested by bacteria) lactose such as milk, yogurt, and cottage cheese are significant sources of galactose. Even whey, casein and soy products may contain galactose. See Galactosemia Resources for and Galactosemia Overview more info. Since, in genetically abnormal people, galactose results in persistent elevated galactose levels in the blood, the effects are observed early in life. Healthy people may develop these symptoms as well, but much later in life, due to the cumulative effects of long term galactose and fructose consumption. Note that the “problems caused” are similar to diabetes.
