Honestly, the best thing you can do is to educate yourself. The more you know about pianos, the better you will be at choosing the right piano dealer, the best piano, and even the technician that will best suit your piano’s particular needs. The place to start is The Piano Book by Larry Fine. Regarding used pianos, I cannot stress enough the importance of having the piano evaluated by an RPT before you purchase one, or even accept it free as a gift. Unfortunately, many “dead” pianos with serious problems are often sold a few times or given away before they are properly disposed of.
