How can I argue that the Creation story is true, and the earth is 6000 yrs old against a geology lecturer?
The subject of geology is truly amazing and I urge you to carry on with your course, maybe you will even be lucky enough to work as a geologist (as I have done for over 20 years). The evidence for a very old earth (say, 4 billion years give or take a few tens of millions!) is quite simply, wondrous, awe-inspiring and overwhelming, and the arguments for this are simply too many to repeat here. Go look on the web! Beware: much of the stuff put out by “young earth creationists” and “intelligent designers” (taking the Bible literally at 6000 years old) is simply propaganda, bad science (VERY bad science), and that includes answers by numerous repeat offenders on yahoo Q&A. You’ll just have to trust me as a professonal geologist on this one. That said, there is plenty of room in geology, and all of science, for a pragmatic and non-literal interpretetation of the bible that can accomodate both the science and the spiritual. I’m sure you know what I am talking about! Go and study the subject
Well, nobody has been able to disprove the existence of God, but then again nobody has proved it either using the scientific method. So it basically the Bible versus scientific evidence and I’m afraid you are going to lose this one. Really if you want to start a theological discussion on the origin of the earth I think you may be in the wrong class. You professor is a scientist, and the bible is not a scientific authority. You might try engaging her after class in discussions of faith and how they may or may not relate to her beliefs on the earth and its creation. She may even surprise you.
You cannot put up a good argument for biblical creation. All of the physical evidence supports the idea that the earth is over four billion years old. There is no physical evidence for a young earth. I think that you have the wrong attitude towards this class. It is your professor’s class, and you should do it her way. After all, she knows her subject much better than you do. Make up you mind. Do you want to learn geology or be a pest? If the latter, drop geology. It would be better for all of the other students if you either did it her way or left.
There are no good arguments in favor of any creation story, christian or otherwise. If you really want to annoy her do not try creation arguments, that will just provoke (justified) contempt for you. But if she did go on and on as you described you might ask her if she went off that way because she was on the rag. I suggest you stand by the door when asking and run right to the registrar’s office to try to get your refund from the course.
