How can I apply for an abatement on my tax bill (real estate, personal property, motor vehicle excise, boat excise)?

A. If you disagree with the assessed value of your real estate or personal property you may file an abatement application. Abatement applications on real estate and personal property are accepted from January 1 until February 1. Motor vehicle and boat abatements may be applied for within three years after the excise was due, or one year after the excise was paid, whichever is later. Those wishing to apply for a motor vehicle excise abatement must furnish proof of two items: disposition of the vehicle, was it sold or traded for example, and disposition of the vehicles plates in the form of a plate return receipt from the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Boat abatement applications are available if you have sold or traded your boat, or believe your boat bill to be otherwise incorrect.
