For instance, DDR ram, is older from older machines, and can be PC2100, PC2200 or PC3200,plus others. DDR2 uses PC2-3200, PC2-4200, or PC2-5300, plus others DDR3 uses PC3-8500 plus others The number of pins per card are different per DDR type, so they won’t interchange. Also, a few years ago, mixing brands of memory wasn’t so bad, but today, it might not work as well. If your old computer has say, PC3200 by Crucial, and you have PC3200 by Kingston, you are mixing brand names, and it might work, but not as well. If you have PC2-3200 in your machine, you cannot add a PC3200 since they are different DDRs, one is DDR2, the other DDR. However, the slots in the stick won’t fit anyway, so I don’t think you have a problem there.
