Question I am trying to balance the alkalinity in a 35,000 gallon, vinyl, swimming pool. pH is 7.4, Chlorine is between 2 and 3. Problem with testing for alkalinity. Using a Taylors High Reagent test kit. Alkalinity testing involves three steps. Using a 25 ml sample of water to be tested, add 2 drops of thiosulfate, mix. 5 drops of Total alkalinity Indicator, mix, and sample should turn green. Then add sulfuric acid, drop at a time, till sample turns from green to red. This is the problem; When I add the first drops of Total Alkalinity Indicator, sample turns red instead of green. Is alkalinity too high?, too low? What steps do I take to get a valid measurement of alkalinity? I run a pool maintenance business, and know my testing procedures. No one, even some professionals, can answer my problem. Answer It would appear that the alkalinity of the water is lower than the test kit can measure.
