How can HIV infection be diagnosed?

0

Detection of infection is primarily performed by testing a persons blood for the presence of antibodies to HIV, i.e. specific virus-fighting proteins. These antibodies usually need one to three months and may take six months following infection to reach detectable levels. Two types of antibody tests are used to diagnose HIV infection: ELISA and Western Blot.
