How can hearing loss be treated?
First the underlying cause should be determined. Therefore, a formal hearing test is needed followed by a physical exam by the physician. The treatment will depend on the underlying cause. For example, hearing loss that is associated with chronic ear infections with fluid behind the eardrum are often treated with placement of ear tubes. Other types of hearing loss may be treatable with surgery of the eardrum or middle ear bones. Inner ear hearing loss (sensorineural hearing loss) is often best treated with hearing aids.
