How can headteachers and line managers comment on outreach performance; should that not be the responsibility of the LA?
The LA does have a very important role to play here, if it is co-ordinating the AST’s outreach work, but the ultimate responsibility rests with the headteacher. The LA and school should ensure that all outreach activity is properly monitored and evaluated so that it can be fed into the ASTs performance management. Many LAs have produced documentation which supports the evaluation of AST performance. One of these is often in the form of a short questionnaire for completion by the headteacher of the school where outreach is conducted. The AST should keep copies of these and build up evidence for performance management purposes — the AST Induction Handbook contains examples of pro formas that can be used/adapted for this purpose.
