How can galleries elevate art appreciation and awareness levels here?
In the West, children are taken to museums to avail guided tours and that is where art appreciation first begins. Here, gallery shows can provide this experience but there is a lack of support from schools to further the art sensibility among children. Whenever we have had school visits, the response from the primary and secondary level students has been extremely enthusiastic. I aim to officially inform schools that VM is interested in initiating guided gallery talks for school children. Other than children, most of our major shows are accompanied by talks for the benefit of art students, viewers and buyers/ collectors. A talk by eminent art historian and critic Geeta Kapur and her husband Vivan Sundaram, nephew of legendary Indian Modern Artist Amrita Sher-Gil, in 1987 was amongst the first of many discourses, dialogues and slideshows that I have arranged at the gallery. Today, galleries here are not fully equipped to handle new mixed and multimedia media art because it is technology
