How Can Fruit Juice Be Labeled As “100% Juice” If It Also Contains Other Ingredients?
Consumers can be assured of the consistent quality of orange, grapefruit, orange-grapefruit and tomato juices, because the U.S. Department of Agriculture has established standards for them. The government, however, does not provide standards for juices including apple, from other fruits or for juice blends, and the amount of juice they actually contain can vary greatly. Only a few labeling terms can be depended on to reveal if a juice is 100 percent. For example, “100% Pure Juice,”100% Fruit Juice,” “100% Fruit Juice Blends,” or “100% Juice from Concentrate,” accurately describes juice that is truly 100% fruit juice or a blend of fruit juices. On the other hand, product labels that say “100% Real Juice” or “100% Natural” mean nothing. Legal definitions of these terms do not exist and a label that carries them does not guarantee a product that’s made from 100% fruit juice.
