How can fine resolution be unimportant if I can see obvious differences in detail between photos?

Most obvious differences are actually differences of contrast and/or edge sharpness, not of resolution. If you compare test photos of the same subject shot on a tripod, then you may see differences in fine detail that can be attributed to resolution, but they are not likely to be obvious unless you make side-by-side comparisons of large enlargements from close up.
