How can diegetic sound be used to create effective spatial awareness in first-person film?
Initially, the question specified in the proposal was ‘How can diegetic sound be used to create an effective impression of spatial awareness in a first-person perspective film?’. The project aim is to find the most effective methods for creating a soundtrack which gives realistic impressions of the space conveyed in film. A short film will be created in first-person perspective. The soundtrack of this film will be designed to guide the audience’s attention to action out-of-shot. The preliminary work prior to the final film is made up of multimedia questionnaires, where the questions are based on short pieces of film, or consist of only short samples of audio. Diegetic sound production is the prime focus of this study. Diegetic sound is the film’s actual sound, which comes from objects in the scene making the noise. This can be in the frame or out of the frame, but exists in the film because something in the scene has made it.
