How can cults develop such power over individuals?
Cults rely on a variety of strategies to recruit and maintain members. They isolate their recruits from familiar people and surroundings. They restrict sensory experience and may limit access to familiar foods. Cults provide systematic reinforcement to strengthen allegiance to the norms of the group. Usually cults are conducted by charismatic leaders for whom the groups rules do not apply.
