How can civil society contribute to the negotiations?
Pursuant to the “modalities resolution” for the Summit (A/RES/64/184) ], the formal mechanism for civil society inputs into the political process leading to the Summit were the UN General Assembly’s “Informal Interactive Hearings with representatives of non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations and the private sector”(Hearings) ] held at UN Headquarters in New York on 14-15 June 2010. The Hearings were organized by the President of the current 64th session of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki, in cooperation with NGLS and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). To assist him in the preparations, the GA President formed a ‘Task Force’ composed of representatives of civil society, the private sector and local authorities to advise him on the format and participation at the Hearings.
