How can chatter be prevented?

0

Chatter is a rhythmic phenomenon appearing as evenly spaced lines on the surface of the profile. It is commonly caused by rubbing the profile against tooling or a tank separation gasket. Irregular pulling or unusually violent air-drying systems can also be a cause for chatter. Shock waves from some cutters can also cause similar surface imperfections. Prevent chatter by: • Using silicone gaskets instead of other rubber materials as tank section separators. • Making sure that calibration tooling surfaces have been properly prepared (dull, smooth finish). Sandblasting is a good way to accomplish this. • Making sure profile movement is minimal in areas where air-drying is used. • Checking the puller periodically to make sure it provides an even amount of tension in the profile at all times. • Coating tooling surfaces with a Teflon-based material for less friction. • Use of water-soluble lubricants when cooling in a water bath (i.e., fabric softener).
