How can adopting a nutrient dense approach to eating assist with weight management?
Simply put, you can eat more and take in fewer calories which, when combined with your training, should produce a natural progression to a healthful weight/ body composition profile. Success with this approach comes from focusing on foods rich in nutrients while still being mindful of the caloric contribution of each food. The calorie or energy density of food (concentration of calories per serving) must be taken into consideration when deciding on the appropriate portion. These foods CAN be part of a weight management plan, but care must be taken in the amount consumed. Energy dense/ nutrient dense foods play a major role in fueling athletes during the longer and more intense training days. Early season, however, you do need to keep portions of these foods controlled – otherwise you will be frustrated that the scale is not budging, even though you are eating healthfully.
