How can a UK citizen work in the US, what type of visa would you need ?

You need to find a job first, then your future employer will sponsor you for the visa. An H1 visa would be the most likely, but this requires you to be highly skilled in an area of shortage in the USA. This should take a few months after you get a job offer. It will be very easy for you – the hard part has to be done by the future employer. If you’re very highly skilled you can apply for a national interest waiver green card, and then you could find a job wherever you wanted with no additional hassles. This process is slow (at least a year), though, so you’re better off getting the H1 visa, and then applying for the green card after you’re in America.
