How can a technical lead effectively balance coding responsibilities with team leading & mentoring?
This was selected as Best Answer If you’re finding yourself being pulled both ways on a day-to-day basis, try alternating focus every few days. On good days, I take the view that leading and mentoring will in the long run, end up increasing the productivity of the company overall since these people you’re helping will be able to grow and tackle increasingly complex problems without direct supervision. On these days, I strive to give as much feedback and mentoring as I can. I acknowledge that I might have to interrupt my own work to go and help someone out. On bad days, I effectively implement a closed-door policy and ask people to go back and stew on their problems a bit more, unless its urgent. Pointers in the general direction and a shove usually helps them along, albeit a much slower pace than if I intervened directly. It also helps to point them towards each other as support.
