You pose a really good question!
But first off, I would like to clarify the term you used: "religious people". From a completely truthful standing perspective: There is a huge difference between "religious people" and people who follow God and the Bible in truth. There are people who are religious (within liberal churches (bible fakers), christian cults (bible twisters), or modern paganism (bible ignorers) who try to look good in front of others and or who try to attain God’s salvation by good works. Then there are people who seek the truth and have a real living and loving relationship with God (Jesus) himself. How do we know this? The Bible is God’s Perfect Word (or Instruction Manual) for man today so that we may have a loving true relationship with him (if we choose to accept it by faith and prayer). "For whosoever call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved". ~Romans 10:13. The big difference between religious people and true bible believing christians is that the person who has a relationship with God and follows the Bible is saved by grace. "For by grace are ye saved thru faith; and not that of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." ~Ephesians 2:8-9. The person who is religious does not have a relationship with God and thus must attain works for his false lie of salvation or to put on a good show in front of other people (to look holy when in fact he or she is not).
Secondly, to address the first person that answered your question: I want to clarify that most true Bible believing christians (that are God-filled and use the Bible as their final authority) do not believe in theistic-evolution (The belief in both a God and the theory of evolution). The reason for this is that the strong and true bible believing christian is more willing to please God more than himself. He is willing to seek the truth and not his own version of it. Granted, there are exceptions to the rule (like someone new in the faith, ECT.). But generally the true christian does not believe in theistic-evolution. But it is true. There are a lot of liberal bible churches out there that don’t take all of God’s Word as it was intended. So you will see even people that believe in the Bible also believing in evolution. The problem is that the Bible is strongly opposed to the concept of evolution.
Also, in addition: It is true that Catholics, and Jews have accepted the teaching of evolution to their kids within schools. Then again, these religions don’t exactly use God’s Word (The Holy Bible) as their final authority in their lives either. So they don’t exactly fit within the Bible’s version of the word "christian" as mentioned in the Book of Acts and 1st Peter. Sure, they may fit within main stream media’s term for the word "christian". But when it comes down to the truth, they are not really christians as described in the Bible. Which is of course where the word "christian" originally came from in the first place.

Now, as for christian cults: It is true. Certain christian cults (such as Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses) are all about not wanting you to think for yourself. They twist the truth of the Bible and don’t want you to examine the scientific and historical truths that exist within it. They don’t want you to believe that there is just one all perfect divine book that was sent from God. They believe that it is okay that there is yet another book or additional magazine material (that re-writes the truth) that can go along with the Bible. But this does not makes sense because God’s Word never foretold of any additional divine books or inspired new prophets. Also, the Bible does not work in harmony with these added books or new prophets either. However, the Old Testament and New Testament of the Holy Bible have amazing harmony with each other. Especially when you consider that there are over 400 prophesies Jesus fulfilled alone.

Okay. Finally, to answer the heart of your question: "How can a religious person (a true christian) ignore the facts of evolution?"
Well, it is a common misconception that the "knowledgable Bible believing (only) christian" is ignoring the facts of Evolution and is clinging to their bibles in blind faith.
1. God’s Spirit dwells within the true Christian (sending him confirmation of the truth and wisdom).
2. The knowledgable Christian can give answers to show that the Bible is strongly rooted in both history and in science soundly (See link below under the title heading "Truth of the Word").
3. Evolution is more of a theory than it is a fact if you think about it.
(a) Evolution goes against the 2nd law of Thermodynamics.
The basic laws of science are firmly opposed to evolution, especially The Second Law of Thermodynamics which insists that all real processes yield less organization and information in their products than in the original. This basic law leads to de-volution, not evolution. The presence of abundant external energy has never, as far as science has observed, produced beneficial mutations or added information to the genome as evolutionists claim. Instead, an abundance of incoming energy will hasten the deterioration of living things, especially the DNA. It will not bring about their evolution. Evolution is against the Law!
(b) No proper evidence of the transitional life forms.
When we look at the record of life in the past, we see no conclusive evidence that any basic category arose from some other category either. We see that some categories have gone extinct, like the dinosaurs, but the rest fit into the same categories that we see today. We see dogs in great variety, even some extinct varieties, but no half dog/half something else. Evolutionists have a few transitional forms that are commonly mentioned, but if evolution and descent from common ancestors really occurred we should see multiplied thousands of transitional forms. We do not see them.
(c) Evolution = No Creator or God (No Accountability).
Science teaches us the "cause and effect principle": that for every action there is an opposite reaction. If you knock a stack of properly placed dominos, they will fall down. If you look both ways before you cross a street, you increase your odds of not getting hit by a car. If you do good, then good will eventually come back unto you. If you do bad or evil, then bad or evil things come unto you. Furthermore, every person has a built in moral compass inside them; letting them know what is right and wrong. Now, sometimes this moral compass gets a little messed up for certain individuals because of addiction, deception, or dark emotions (of the heart). However, the very fact that society teaches us the concept of accountability confirms the idea that each of us have a built in set of morals. I mean if there was no law that prevented murderers and rapists to rome free, we would be living in an even worse messed up world than we are living in now. In other words: society teaches us that if we continuously commit crimes, there is a good chance that we could be held accountable for those actions.
(d) Belief in Evolution goes against any spirit based accounts, the Bible, and or miracles.
There have been many real accounts of Heaven, Hell, angels and demons (bad angels). There has also been various alien and ghost encounters coincidentally putting off the smell of brimstone, too. A smell that is closely associated with punishment and Hell. Coincidence? Or are these angels of lights (demons in disguise)? Oh, and what about all the medical miracles of people who have been healed overnight because of the power of prayer, too? In fact, there are many miracles of all kinds which take place all the time because of prayer from (Bible believing-God filled) christians.
Furthermore, if you were to look carefully, you would see that there is an attack on God’s Word (The Bible) because it has value (just like gold and diamonds have value). You will notice many christian cults (Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Catholics, and Muslims) twist the truth of the Bible to suit their sinful purposes. You will notice scientists (that believe in Creationism) end up getting fired from the scientific community for simply mentioning God or quoting the Bible. In fact, the scientific community’s reception of God and the Bible is one of hate and not truth, understanding, or love. All of this hatred and constant war against the Bible is surely not a coincidence if you were to sit down and truly research the topic deeply. In reality: if you were to really dig deep for the truth: you would discover that evolution is yet another deception to lead you away from God (Your Creator) and the Bible.

However, God does not want you to be led away from the truth. God wants to live in your life. In fact, He speaks to you thru His Word (The Bible). An amazing book that is more than just a collection of words written by mere men. It is a book that was God-breathed thru imperfect but God seeking men. Oh, and to further prove the Bible is constantly under attack even more: You will discover that people will try to take the Bible out of context and claim that there are contradictions within it. They don’t look at the original Hebrew words or they don’t look at the surrounding words (or other chapter verses) to put the supposed Bible contradiction into proper context. But to put your mind at ease. Yes. Every single Bible contradiction out there has been answered by christians in a logical manner in some shape or form.

The only religious people that do are being misled by their cult leadership. Most religious people understand and accept evolution, and even work in scientific fields that depend on it. The majority of Catholics & other mainstream Christians, and most Jews teach evolution in their schools and realize that it is just one of the many processes God uses in the universe — like gravity. Many, like “Anon” poster, confuse the definitions of “theory” and don’t understand how it is used in science. They think it means “guess.” LOL — in which case the theory of gravity is also a guess, and they should test it out. Unfortunately, the fundaMENTALists are actually hurting people of faith with their very vocal ignorance. It is very difficult to overcome brainwashing, and they don’t appear to be very motivated to change.
