How can a public institution or company accommodate transgender people?
Create a written policy that expresses zero tolerance for discrimination against transgender individuals, allowing for their protection. Create written and concrete consequences for those who do not comply so transgender individuals feel safe in their work environment. Use the preferred name and pronouns of each employee and ensure that paperwork corresponds. Do not disclose birth sex or employee’s sex or gender expression history. Allow the individual to use the restroom or lockeroom that corresponds with their gender identity or what they are most comfortable with. In some cases if it is possible, it may be appropriate or the individual may prefer a gender neutral, private stall bathroom.
