How can a nonverbal or physically impaired child communicate a choice?
Even though individuals may not be able to verbalize or point to their choices, they can communicate in many other ways. Nonverbal children can signal choice by pointing to or reaching towards picture icons, photographs, and objects. Consult with a speech-language pathologist to determine if augmentative alternative communication devices such as switches and buttons would be appropriate for a student. These devices can significantly enhance choice-making skills. Persons with severe physical limitations can often communicate through eyegaze, facial gestures and vocalizations.
