How can a metro try to boost its standing?
Success in technology industries is critical to improving a metro’s ranking. A metro must leverage what assets it has, a good university, college graduates, and develop a better business climate through such activities and public/private collaborations. Economic develop strategy must be altered by local officials to reflect the criteria for success in the New Economy. It must attempt to assist its young entrepreneurs in building successful firms. Seattle and Microsoft is a prime example. A metro should strive to help future Bill Gates’ build firms that are so dominant that the Justice Department attempts to break them apart. Perhaps the most important component is for government to get out of the way most of the time. Government should provide an environment conducive to growth.
