How can a liturgical church program spirituals?
Spirituals, if chosen as thoughtfully as our anthems, hymns, canticles, responses, and solos, are well suited for any and all of these functions in the liturgy. Congregations, choirs of all ages, and soloists can all experience the deep prayer and jubilant praise that can be found in the language of the spirituals. Spirituals can also richen our instrumental music, whether played on organ, piano, handbells, or other instruments and ensembles.
