How can a chlorinated pool become contaminated?
• Chlorine in pools can take time to be fully effective. If contamination enters a pool, swimmers are at risk for a time. • Typical contamination occurs when swimmers have active diarrheal illness. • Healthy adults or children can also inadvertently contaminate the water with their waste. • Cryptosporidium, which can cause stomach cramps, fever, diarrhea and vomiting, can survive for days in chlorinated water.
