How can a child become emancipated?
Emancipation removes a youth, ages 16 & 17, from the care of his/her parents. In order to be emancipated by the Court under Connecticut law, you must be at least 16 years old and meet one of the following conditions: 1) be married, 2) be in the armed forces, 3) be living apart from your parents or guardian and be managingyour own finances, or 4) the court must determine that an emancipation is in the best interest of you or your parents. Either the parent or child can start the emancipation process by filing a Petition for Emancipation in the Superior Court for Juvenile Matters or the Probate Court in the town in which the child resides.
