A. Proficiency occurs when students are provided multiple opportunities to practice the arts throughout a K-12 standards-based sequential arts curriculum. It is strongly recommended that all students in the middle years take classes in multiple arts disciplines. Research has shown that when students enter the middle school level they are developmentally ready to participate in a variety of learning experiences that will give them a knowledge and skills base to make decisions as they enter high school. Some students will be ready to make this decision; some will not. It is the responsibility of the high school and each discipline’s curriculum to provide opportunities throughout their program of study that leads toward proficiency and makes courses available throughout the four years. Also, some students may need help from guidance counselors, parents, and teachers to be more reflective about their experiences in school.
