How big is the problem of homelessness in NYC right now?
Each night, over 38,000 homeless individuals sleep in New York City shelters. Thousands more sleep on City Streets and about 3,600 to 8,000 sleep in public places. Nearly 1 in 20 new Yorkers have experienced homelessness There are 1,000 soup kitchens in NYC. Most are now turning some people away. About half the homeless women in NY have been subjected to domestic violence and over half the people in municipal shelters have some form of mental illness.
