Sorry this is a confusing question. The mainland of PNG occupies the eastern side of the Island of New Guinea. The other side is shared with Indonesia. PNG is, however not just this island. It consists of many other islands. Some of the bigger ones are New Britain, New Ireland and Bougaiville but it has hundreds of other islands. The area of the island of New Guinea is 786,000 km(303,500 mi sq).
