How big is the area that will need to be quarantined?
This depends on the nature of the disease involved, the livestock populations in the area and the nature of the surrounding countryside. Usually there are guidelines for diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease that require quarantine of an area covering at least a 5km radius from the initial case. The actual shape of the area will depend on the known distribution of the disease and features such as roads and mountains that enable check points to be established on access roads.
