How big can the image files be?

The file size that can be used depends on the final use of the image. Keep in mind a 28.8 modem downloads at roughly 7 minutes per megabyte (MB). How long do you think the customer will wait for the map? I’ve seen files on the Web as large as 60 MB (yes, that’s 7 hours to download). I try to keep the maps smaller than .8 MB for the Web. For CD, you can use larger files. The access speed of the CD drive make the “download” speed irrelevant. You could use files as large as the storage space of the CD allows (e.g. 75 maps on a CD equals about 8.5 MB per map). I try to keep the file size down below 3 MB per map, however, because I’m concerned that older computers will lock up with the larger images.
