How big can covalent molecules get?
Organic molecules such as carbohydrates and D.N.A. found in living things can be made up of millions or billions of atoms, with each atom’s bonding according to the rules of covalency. Synthetic molecules like plastics and silicon rubber are just as large as their naturally occurring organic relatives. Diamonds are classified as Giant Molecular Crystals and a single diamond can be considered as one molecule with billions and billions of carbon atoms all bonded together in one crystal.
