How big are baby whale vertebrae?
The vertebrae of a young whale at birth can easily be the size of an adult hand and can grow to a foot or more in adulthood. Due to the tremendous size variation in whale types, along with rapidity of growth (calves easily grow a foot or more per month), scientists are often left to estimate the size of adult whales from backbones and vertebrae.Source:University of Florida: Stranded Right Whale Washes Ashore: Picture of Young Whale Vertebrae and BackboneMuseum of the Earth.org: Whale of a Tale: Pictures of Juvenile Whale Vertebrae and BackboneThe Houston Chronicle: Whale Bones Turn up at Matagorda IslandSouth Australian Whale Centre: Whale SkeletonsKodiak Alaska Bare Bones Education, Kodiak Alaska: Kodiak Grey Whale Project including Pictures of VertebraeMore Information:Learner.org: Humpback Whales–Got Milk?Mr.
