Editorial By: CanIndia News Weekly Asians and other visible minorities play an increasingly important role in North American society. Visible minorities consist of 10 percent of Canada’s population. Asians have been for several decades the main source of migrants into Canada. There is also a growing Canadian born Asian population in Canada. Together, Asian-Canadians have contributed and helped shape Canadian society. In the last two decades, the Canadian government has acknowledged that minorities as a legitimate and integral component of Canada’s much vaunted “mosaic.” This commitment to diversity exists within the Multicultural Act and Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Yet, the mass media continues to garner criticism for their unbalanced, biased and inaccurate coverage of minorities.
