How badly will a simple lettering tattoo hurt?

Everyone that answered is right.  The location of the tattoo will have a big influence on the "hurt" factor.  Where the skin is tight and not too thin, it will hurt less.  The size of the tattoo is also a huge factor.  It you’ve selected one that will take minutes vs hours, it won’t hurt as much.  Here’s the big one… a tattoo that has a LOT of shading will hurt the most, especially if it’s big!  The "shading" or color on the tattoo, is like putting FIRE on your skin, hurts like H$LL!.  The end result is what you need to visualize.  My first one, piece of cake (little butterfly on my arm), my second one, uniquie art thing of tarot & stuff – cool, hurt like hell… lower back, my third – OMG, work of art… half of my upper leg, 15+ hours and I love IT!  (I’m 53… got my first tattoo when they were skin art of rebellion. 🙂  Use the Tattoo goo, helps!  kd

It really depends on where you get it. If it’s near a bone (ankle, etc.) it does hurt more. If you get it on a more fleshy part it feels like a kitten scratching you. But I have a VERY high pain tolerance.

I got my brother’s initials in my inner ankle and it hurt like hell, but it was near the bone so that’s why. The closer to a bone, the more it will hurt. They more fatty the area is, the less it will hurt. However, any tattoo you get will have some pain.

Nobody will be able to tell you how much it hurts, because everyone’s body is different and everyone’s experience of pain is different. You shouldn’t let pain put you off, it’s the passion and the determination to go through with it that count. If you really want the tattoo, a little pain won’t matter.
