How badly have coral reefs been damaged in recent times?
A 2004 study found that about 70 percent of the world’s coral reefs were either threatened or destroyed, up from 59 percent in 2002. Over 20 percent of the world’s coral reefs were “damaged beyond repair.” Some of the causes for this damage are natural severe storms, for instance but much of it can be attributed to humans.
