How bad does decomposing kitchen waste really smell?
It won’t smell any worse than the yard waste that you already composting. The best way to control compost odors is to have a good mix of “green matter” and “brown matter.” Green is things that are high in nitrogen like manure or grass clippings. Brown matter is higher in carbon and includes leaves, wood chips and shredded newspaper. Too much nitrogen in a compost pile is what makes it smell bad. Not enough nitrogen will prevent things from breaking down and result in a cold compost pile.
