How bad are the side effects of malaria tablets?

Presumably you mean anti-malarial tablets? Well there are many to choose from and the best option is dependent upon where you are travelling and for what length of time. Chloroquine has few side-effects but is largely useless in many places due to emergence of resistance by the malaria parasite. Doxycycline is an antibiotic with antimalarial properties but its effectiveness varies depending on where you are travelling. Mefloquine is still effective everywhere but has relatively common psychiatric side-effects ranging from feeling slightly low to depression. Malarone is effective everywhere and has few side effects but is quite expensive in comparison to the others. There are others I haven’t mentioned. It would be best to speak to a specialised travel physician who can advise you on your best option weighing up effectiveness, cost and side effects.
