How available are student internships and other hands-on music performance experiences?
That depends on the school and its location. Some big schools are stuffed into tiny rural towns, where there are lots of students fighting for a fistful of gigs. Most schools are close enough to a decent-sized urban center that there are probably gigs to be had, if you know where to look. In general, the bigger the city, the more performing experiences that will be available. In what ways could the music/performing arts education system be changed to better serve society? First, we simply need more of it. The reason basketball is the most popular sport in the country is because at some point, the majority of the male population has played some type of organized basketball. So, when Jordan jumps from the free-throw line to dunk, or when Larry Bird shoots a 3-point shot from behind the rim, people understand that.
