How are women affected by homelessness? What are the consequences?
In 2004, approximately 40 % of the 3 million homeless Americans were families with children, 14 % were single women and 4 % were independent children, according to the National Law Center for Homelessness and Poverty.Women become homeless for a variety of reasons, ranging from domestic violence to financial hardships, lack of affordable housing and behavioral or health problems.Regardless of the causes, homeless women may experience: • Mental and emotional problems like anxiety, depression and low self-esteem • Behavioral problems like aggression and hostility • Hunger and illnesses like asthma, ear infections and stomach problems • Physical abuse and sexual exploitation (through, pornography, prostitution, rape)
