How are thunderstorms and tornadoes related?
Tornadoes are usually produced by extremely strong thunderstorms. A thunderstorm is created by rapidly rising air. This air causes a low pressure area on the ground. This can start a counter-clockwise (in the Northern hemisphere) vortex that, if intense enough, can produce rotation in the clouds. A tornado is essentially an extreme case of this vortex.
