How are the wings organized?
Fighting wings consist of 8-12 dragons, with a maximum of 2 bronzes, 3 browns, 3 blues and 4 greens. Wingleaders are usually bronze, but occasionally an exceptional brown is given the position. Wingseconds can be either bronze or brown. Blues and greens are not eligible to be wingleaders or wingseconds only because the smaller dragons do not have the stamina to remain in the air through the entire fall. This certainly does not mean, however, that blues and greens are not equally important and valued among the wings. The queens’ wing consists of all gold dragons, as well as injured, pregnant, older and younger riders who may not be able to safely fly with the fighting wings. The weyrlings’ wing contains the weyrlingmaster and his assistant(s) as well as all weyrlings. Q: How long is weyrling training? A: 8 months.
