Students will receive 50-200 pages of curricular materials at the beginning of the course. A syllabus will outline the various study units and the schedule for completing them. A typical study unit is one week to one month in length and involves (1) reading a text and (2) doing a learning project to absorb and use what you have read. Learning projects usually include firesides, deepenings, a writing project, an artistic project, or some other effort of the student’s choice. The student sends the project to the Institute, which places it anonymously on the course’s website (this allows students to see and benefit from each other’s work) and sends the students comments about the project. Students also participate in the course’s electronic listserver–which allows an ongoing discussion of the study assignments with faculty and other students–and in conference calls, where a live discussion of the course occurs. Students are encouraged to form a local study group so that they can discuss
