How are the services offered by the EAP different from the mental health services available through my health insurance?
The mental health services offered by your health insurance plan differ from services provided through the EAP in two important ways. First, most health insurance companies require that a mental illness diagnosis be given to someone receiving counseling (psychotherapy). Your EAP does not have the same requirement and counseling may be sought for anything that is causing personal difficulty. The second important difference is that EAP services are designed to be brief – limited to three sessions. A referral can be made to another service provider if additional counseling is required.
