How are the results for the Challenge calculated?
Trips Saved Trips saved is a total of all trips saved by 2010 participants. Miles Saved Miles saved is a total of all miles saved by 2010 participants. Dollars Saved Dollars saved is calculated by $0.562 x the number of miles saved. In AAA’s report, “Your Driving Costs,” 2010 edition, the cost per mile is $0.562 based on a medium sized sedan and traveling 15,000 miles per year. This figure includes all costs of driving (costs of ownership, maintenance, gas, etc.). Energy Saved Energy saved is calculated by 0.04545 gallons of gas x the number of miles saved. This formula is based on the average passenger car getting approximately 22 miles per gallon. Emissions Saved Emissions saved is calculated by 1.679 pounds of emissions x the number of miles saved.
