How are the overnight towns and routes selected?
A. Ideally, we like to select roads that have a traffic count of fewer than 2,000 cars per day and fewer than 200 trucks. The absolute ideal for riders is 10 to 12 miles between towns. More than 20 miles is going to be a hardship for riders if the highway is extremely hilly, if there is a headwind, or if the weather is hot and humid. When this type of mileage cannot be avoided, RAGBRAI will make arrangements for food and drink along this stretch of highway.
