How are the outer limits of the continental shelf established?
Particulars of the outer limit of the continental shelf may be submitted to the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf no later than 10 years after ratification of UNCLOS. In accordance with its Scientific and Technical Guidelines, the Commission will review the submission and make appropriate recommendations regarding the outer limit of the continental shelf. However, only the coastal State can establish the final and binding limits of its continental shelf on the basis of those recommendations.
