How are the non-permanent members selected?
Each year the General Assembly elects five non-permanent members (out of 10 in total) for a two-year term. The 10 non-permanent seats are distributed on a regional basis: five for African and Asian countries; one for Eastern European countries; two for Latin American and Caribbean countries; two for Western European and other countries. A list of the meetings at which the elections took place (1946 onwards) is accessible at: http://lib-unique.un.org/lib/unique.nsf/Link/R05962.
