How are the MIS and Computer Science programs at the University of Hartford different from MWD?
In a broad sense, computer science encompasses computer design / architecture, computer programming, information processing, and problem solving using an algorithmic approach. The focus of management information systems (MIS) is the development of systems to support specific management decision-making. The pragmatic, web-oriented nature of MWD clearly delineates it from the more theory-based computer science and the more business-oriented MIS program. While MWD incorporates aspects of both, the emphasis is different. The MWD major focuses on the application of available software for use in information technology using the Internet and other interactive media as its vehicles. The authoring of web-aware multimedia material serves as a common thread to unite the major. The primary goal of MWD is to prepare its graduates to competitively enter the quickly changing Internet and multimedia job market.
