How are the melting and boiling point of water affected by adding salt?
Dissolving salt in water will lower the melting point and raise the boiling point. For example, if you add 29.2 grams (slightly more than 1 ounce) of salt to one liter (1.8 pints) of pure water, the melting point is lowered by 1.85 degC (i.e. to -1.85 degC) and the boiling point is raised by 0.5 degC (i.e. to 100.5 degC).
